Mount Kaukau - Best Views in Wellington

As part of a deal Dennis and Clay, his friend, made with their parents we finally climbed up to the top of Mt Kaukau. (The boys wanted a sleepover very much and this was just one item on the list.) So on Tuesday, 22 June it was a fine, clear, sunny day. Clay's sister, Kennedy, joined us.
The top left photo is looking south; the mountains in the background are the South Island. The little stick looking things in the distance are wind turbines. Our camera did not capture the snow covered peaks, but we saw two beautiful ones. The top right photo is facing southwest. That's the Tasman Sea and if you look closely you will see a glimmer at the bottom of the hills, a stream. The sheep are grazing over there. Bottom left is looking at Wellington City, the bay and the South Pacific. You can see my shadow taking the photograph. Bottom right is the three kids celebrating making it to the top.
We walked from our house on Awarua Street, up Bells Track and then along the Skyline Walkway (where it was windy and cold). It took about 1 hour 15 minutes to get up there. We had a snack break and then climbed down about 1 hour. The kids felt the burn on the legs going up. I felt the effects on my knees the next day. Dennis' methodology was to run, rest, walk, then run, rest, walk again. Clay's method was to keep up with Dennis. They had an informal contest to see if the boys or the girls would get to the top first. Kennedy and I attacked the hill by steadily keeping on going.
The kids were quite proud of themselves and were quite amazed that they could see where we'd been. Mt Kaukau has a big tower on top making it distinctive. The boys said it should be spelled Mount Cow-Cow due to the cow piles we tiptoed around! They had a good point!

A good time was had by the girls. Clay and Dennis enjoyed the lollies and the peanut cookies the most.
