Bun Puns

In late January, I was walking to church one Sunday morning and fell hard on my bottom. It had rained the day before and the asphalt footpath was slippery. My whole right bottom was bruised and tender for two weeks. Anyone touching my bottom (husband or son) got yelled at to keep their paws off. Dennis said to me, "Mom, you must be really bummed out." I was lopsided as well with the bruised bum swollen bigger than the other one. A month later and it's almost fully healed. The experience gives new meaning to my expression, "tough tushies."

Friends

Camping

Our home school group had a family camp with 28 families and about 120 people. Some families stayed in cabins. Others like us, slept out in our tent two nights. One of the nights it rained and we stayed dry. The tents are designed for NZ wind and rain. Dennis enjoyed running around with some friends. The camp has a Confidence Course which includes climbing, rope swings and creek crossings. He and his friends pretended to be Indiana Jones. He also did a bit of kayaking. The first night we participated in quiz night. We found out we could learn a lot more about NZ history. The second night was a big campfire. Many marshmallows were roasted. Here the marshmallow bags include pink strawberry flavored as well as white vanilla ones. The pink ones are overly sweet when roasted! We sang a song to the tune of Frere Jacques:

Life is butter
Life is butter

Melancholy flower
Melancholy flower

Life is but a flower
Life is but a flower

Cauliflower
Cauliflower

We also shouted from one group to the next, "there ain't no flies on us, there ain't no flies on us, there may be flies on you guys, but there ain't no flies on us!" Also on the fly theme, we all sang, "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly." Other songs: "Grand Old Duke of York," "Do Your Ears Hang Low."

When we returned home, we set up the tent for drying and aired our sleeping bags. After about an hour we brought them in just in time for more rain!

Gardening at the Wadestown Library

Today Dennis wanted to go gardening at the Wadestown Library.  He asked me, being the opportunist I am I said sure for two hours.  Being the opportunist Dennis is he begged me to go with him!  So I said sure but I will be a while.  An hour and a half later I wandered down to the library to see how things were going and lend a hand.

Dennis was clearing a path of undergrowth while others were scatting mulch.  I grabbed a shovel and started to spread mulch.  It was a great time hauling mulch up the hill with the neighbors I wish I had gone earlier (not just because I missed the free sausages either!)

I found out that Dennis had been very helpful and was very polite.  Everyone who found out I was Dennis' dad came up to me and complemented Dennis behavior.  Dennis even pitched in and helped me push big wheelie bins of mulch up the hill.

Dennis made me real proud of him today.

Victorious!

I just won a two day Risk battle!

It was down to the wire (leave for TKD shortly) my forces spread thin and my opponents poised to acquire 10 or more armies with their Risk cards; I pulled a daring move. I concentrated my whole army and swept through Europe and Asia.

I cleared the board of every last remnant of the opponents and took the title of Ruler of the known world!

Going camping

Today we are leaving for a two day home school camp.  Forecast is for rain the next two days ... I imagine a calvin and hobbs moment.

Where are the commercials!?

Today, Monday, I watched my first Superbowl in New Zealand.  It was a great game, good to see real football again as opposed to the Rugby they have here.  Excellent game, while the Saints won a very decisive victory, it was not until the 4th quarter the outcome was pre-determined.

What I found quite strange, in fact disturbing, was the lack of commercials.  We watched it on ESPN out of Australia.   Not only did they not broadcast the US commercials they didn't have any paid commercials here in New Zealand.  Not even some good Ozzy beer commercials, Just some lame ESPN advertisements.

I went to a friend's house (Kiwi) here in Karori that recently came back from 3 years in the US.  He loves football and was up on the US sports scene.  I held my own only because I knew the team names and the general sport rules.  We both had a great time chatting about life in the US.

But no commercials!  I will spend the next two days downloading them...
